Dreamweaver The Basics 5 hours, hands-on
This class is for people who have never used Dreamweaver. You will receive an extensive overview of the Dreamweaver WorkSpace and learn how to create a basic web page. You will learn how to set up a site, enter and format text, create hyperlinks, insert graphics and the steps involved to publish the page to a server.
Tables 5 hours, hands-on
Tables are used on web pages to display data and to position text and images on a page. You will learn how to create tables in Dreamweaver using the Insert command and with the Draw tool. The final exercise will be to create a page from scratch using tables to layout the page. Prerequisite: Dreamweaver Basics or equivalent experience.
Templates & forms 5 hours, hands-on
Learn how to create a web site using a template that allows common elements to be repeated on every page. You will also learn how to create simple forms to collect email addresses, take a survey, etc. Prerequisite: Dreamweaver Basics and Tables or equivalent experience.
CSS & behaviors 5 hours, hands-on
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and Behaviors are essential additions to almost any web site. Lear how to use style sheets to control the format and positioning of text on your web pages. Learn to use Dreamweaver's Behaviors (i.e. JavaScripts) to create rollover buttons and a slide show. Prerequisite: Dreamweaver Basics, Tables, and Templates or equivalent experience.
Digital Photographs
Picasa: Organize and Edit Your Digital Photos 3 hours, hands-on
Picasa is a free photo management program from Google that allows you to find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. You will download and install Picasa and then use the program to organize photos in folders, add labels, fix red eyes, crop, and apply lighting and color effects to photographs. Prerequisite: None
Editing Photos with Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 hours, hands-on
Learn how to enhance photographs by cropping, adjusting brightness and contrast, resizing, sharpening, and fixing red eyes. You will also learn how to cut a person from one photograph and place the person into another photograph. Prerequisite: None
Microsoft Office - 2003 and 2007
Access 2003 or 2007: Introduction & Intermediate -- 3 hours, each course, presentation or hands-on
Learn how to set up a database in Microsoft Office's Access using multiple tables. Learn how to enter data into the tables with a form or with a table. Create relationships among the tables and develop queries and reports.
Contacts: Managing contacts in Microsoft Outlook -- 3 hours, presentation or hands-on
Contacts is an ideal place to store names, addresses, phone numbers and a lot more. But did you know that you can create additional fields, change the forms for entering data, and customize how you view your contacts? Learn how to do all this and more in this class.
Designing a one-page newsletter using Word -- 2 hours, presentation or hands-on
Ever need to get a one page newsletter quickly out to announce an upcoming event or to ask people to advocate for your organization? This class will teach you how to create a newsletter in Word. You will learn to set margins, add a headline, format text in columns, create text boxes, insert graphics including WordArt and AutoShapes and wrap text around graphics.
Excel 2003 or 2007: Create a basic spreadsheet -- 3 hours, presentation or hands-on
Learn how to use Excel to insert and format text and numbers into a spreadsheet. You will learn how to create formulas and to save and print your spreadsheet.
Mail merge -- 3-5 hours, presentation or hands-on
Do you tear out your hair in frustration when attempting a mail merge in Word? If so, this class is for you. Learn how to bring in names and addresses from an Excel spreadsheet and insert into a Word document. You will create mailing labels for these documents and also learn how to create a list of names and contact information with the mail merge tool.
PowerPoint 2003 or 2007: Tell a Story, Don't 'Bullet' People to Boredom-- 3 hours, presentation or hands-on
Many people use PowerPoint to display their presentation's outline point-by-point. A better use of PowerPoint may be to tell a story through pictures that people will remember after your presentation. In this class you will examine the pro's and con's of PowerPoint stories. You will create a PowerPoint story in class.
Publisher 2003 or 2007, Introduction & Intermediate -- 3 hours each class, presentation or hands-on
Learn to use Publisher, a desktop publishing program, to create flyers and newsletters. Learn how to use rulers and grids, text spacing (between lines, paragraphs and characters), drop down caps and other Publisher tools to polish your document.
Word 2003 or 2007 Tips -- 2hours, presentation or hands-on
Learn how to work smarter, not harder, when creating documents with Word 2003. In this hands-on class you will learn basic tips that will save you time, make your documents look better and take your Word skills to the next level. Bring your Word questions. View tips.
Windows Vista
Windows Vista overview 2 hours, presentation or hands-on
Microsoft's new operating system, Vista, gives your computer a new look with many special features such as a desktop sidebar to hold "gadgets," 3D view of open windows, breadcrumb navigation, a photo gallery that allows you to assign tags to digital photos, desktop search and much more. Quickly learn how to use these features and make the upgrade to Windows Vista.
Windows XP
Windows XP basic 2 hours, presentation or hands-on
The following basics will be covered: opening, closing, minimizing, resizing, moving Windows; switching between applications; using menus; printing changing print properties, canceling or pausing a print job; creating and arranging shortcuts on the Desktop; common Desktop icons and what they do; using the Recycle Bin; changing time and date; setting up a screen saver; setting up wallpaper; using Help.
Windows XP file management 2 hours, presentation or hands-on
The following topics will be covered in this second session of the Using Windows Series: Using Windows Explorer and My Computer; understanding the Windows file hierarchy; opening files and folders; creating, renaming, and deleting files and folders; copying and moving files and folders; selecting multiple files; backing up files; restoring files from a backup disk; and finding files.
Downloads and attachments 2 hours, presentation or hands-on
Learn how to find, download and install programs such as Adobe Acrobat Reader and WinZip. The first program allows you to view PDF (Portable Document Format) files on the web. The second program is used to zip and unzip large files. You also will learn how to send and receive Word documents and photographs as attachments via email.
Basic maintenance 2 hours, presentation or hands-on
The focus of this presentation is on keeping your computer running in tip top shape. The following topics will be covered: disk properties, ScanDisk, defragmenting a disk, backing up and restoring files, virus programs, installing new hardware and software, uninstalling programs, and system properties.
Windows XP overview 2 hours, presentation
Windows XP is significantly different from previous operating systems such as Windows 98 or Windows ME. The new features and interfaces in Windows XP Pro will be demonstrated. You will learn when it is worthwhile to upgrade to WinXP and how to update the operating system with security patches. Be sure to bring your questions as well as your tips to share with others.
Graphics
Basic graphics 2 hours, presentation
What is a gif? What is a jpeg or a bmp? In this beginner's workshop you will learn how these graphic file types differ and how they are used. Learn what programs can be used to create fliers and to modify photographs. Learn how to receive and send pictures via e-mail. Bring your graphic related questions.
Using the web to find and alter graphics 2 hours, presentation
Learn how to search for graphics on the Internet. Discover web sites that provide graphics and allow you to crop, change color, add text, to the graphics. Learn how to save these graphics to use in a Word document or a web site.
Introduction to Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 hours, hands-on
An overview of terms and the Photoshop Elements window will be presented. You will use the tools for drawing, text, and arranging. During class a flyer will be created. Prerequisite: None
Creating graphics for web pages using Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 hours, hands-on
The focus of this class is on making graphics for web pages. Simple buttons, bullets and banner titles will be created. Photographs will be modified and brought into FrontPage 2002. Prerequisite: Photoshop Elements Basic or familiarity with Photoshop Elements. No FrontPage experience required.

Build a Web Site from Online Step-by-Step Hosts 2 hours, hands-on
Do you need a basic web site in a hurry with a minimum of work and money? There are numerous web sites that not only host your web site for a monthly fee but provide step-by-step web site builders complete with templates. In this class you will look at GoDaddy, 1&1 Website Builder, Homestead, Yahoo SiteBuilder, and others. You will build a one-page site during the class.
Web hosts 2 hours, presentation
Web hosts provide space on servers that are connected to the Internet. One use of this space is to host a web site. During this presentation you will learn:
- What web hosts are available and where to find them
- What services they provide and what they charge
- Questions to ask when shopping for a web host
- How to upload files to the web host
Web site administration 2 hours, presentation
Most web hosts provide a user interface for the web site administrator to manage a web site. Items to manage include disk space, e-mail and files and directories. Many web hosts also provide usage reports, or site statistics. At this presentation the side administrator interface used by the Genesee Gateway will be shown.
Writing for the web 2 hours, presentation
Learn how to write clear and concise text for your web site. You will write copy that focuses on the benefits for the user. You will learn how to place the most important idea first and to write headlines that use "trigger words" (words that people use and recognize) and action verbs. Students will be given writing exercises to complete during the class.
How to rank your web site higher in the search engines 3 hours, presentation
Does your library have a web site that no one seems to find in the search engines? This program will detail the steps to take to help your web site achieve higher rankings in search engine results. You will learn the importance of writing "keyphrase rich" text for the home page. You will learn which search engines and directories people use. You will have a better understanding of the cost of "optimizing" your web site so that people can find it.
Design tips that will set your web site apart 3 hours, presentation
What percentage of people scroll down a web page? Do people use a search box or click on links to find the information they want at a web site? If you are responsible for a library web site, then you need to know the answers to these questions. Far too many web sites have designs that get in the way. Utilizing the 10 basic design rules, you can make sure your library web site works for your users and not against them.
Library web sites: What works, what doesn't 3 hours, presentation
Library web sites are some of the most content-rich sites on the Internet. While content is the most critical item for a good web site, it needs to be supported with good organization, navigation, design and search tools. This workshop is for people who work in small to medium size public and school libraries. You will explore examples of good library web sites and learn why they work for the people using them. You will also see examples of sites that need improvement. During the workshop you will create a list of essential elements as well as a wish list for your library's web site.
Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets 4 hours, hands-on
Cascading Style Sheets, or CSS, is used with HTML to give web site designers more control over how pages are displayed. Style sheets list rules for how elements such as headings, fonts, etc., appear on web pages. In this class you will learn how CSS works and the advantages and disadvantages of using CSS in web design. You will apply CSS to a single web page as well as to a set of pages. The class exercise will be to create a style sheet containing rules for font type, size and color and apply it to web pages, coding directly in HTML. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of HTML.
FrontPage 2002
FrontPage 2002 basic 3 hours, hands-on
FrontPage's components and an overview of how it works will be covered. You will learn how to create a basic web site using a FrontPage wizard. You will add graphics to these pages and create hyperlinks. No prerequisites required.
FrontPage 2002 intermediate 3 hours, hands-on
Building on the Basic class, you will learn how to use FrontPage 2002 to create tables. Class exercises will include creating a one-cell table for an announcement box and using a multiple-cell table to layout a whole page. You will use PhotoShop Elements to create a graphic for a page title and bring it into FrontPage. You will learn how to create graphic hotspots. Prerequisite: FrontPage 2002 Basic or equivalent experience.
FrontPage 2002 advance: Three-column web pages 4 hours, hands-on
Many web sites use a basic 3 or 4 column table to create fast loading and easy-to-use pages. Small graphics are used. Color is added through fonts and background table cells. (See yahoo.com, cnn.com, and www.cwru.edu/UL for examples of such sites.) Using the skills you learned in FrontPage 2002 Intermediate, you will develop more complex pages based upon 3 or 4 column tables. Prerequisite: FrontPage 2002 Intermediate or equivalent experience.
FrontPage 2002 advance: Creating forms with FrontPage 4 hours, hands-on
Using FrontPage 2002 you will create two forms. One form will contain different entry types such as text boxes, radio buttons, and check boxes. The other form will be a small box to place on a page for people to type in their email address to receive library news. You will learn what HTML tags are required to make forms work on servers with and without FrontPage server extensions. Prerequisite: Experience creating web pages with tables in FrontPage or equivalent experience.
FrontPage 2002 advance: Introduction to JavaScripts 4 hours, hands-on
You will learn how JavaScripts work and where to find scripts on the web. You will learn how to cut and paste JavaScripts into the HTML code to create an alert button, to rotate pictures and to create drop-down menus. FrontPage 2002 and HTML will be used. Prerequisite: Experience creating web pages with tables in FrontPage. No experience with JavaScript or direct HTML coding required.

Blogs, or web logs, are personal journals posted on the Internet for all to read. In this class you will see examples of blogs written by humorists, journalists, housewives and teens. Find out how bloggers deliver their blogs through syndicated feeds . You also will learn what tools you need and the steps to follow to create your own blog.
